The 'Super Flu' Sweeping Across the Nation: Symptoms and Impact
The United States is currently grappling with a surge in flu cases, with some states experiencing a more severe impact than others. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hospitalization rates for the flu have risen by 14.3%, with over 9,900 individuals admitted to hospitals across the country.
This season, two influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported, bringing the total to three flu-related pediatric deaths. The predominant influenza virus has been the Influenza A (H3N2) strain, which is particularly concerning due to its potential severity.
Health officials have identified several states where the flu is spreading rapidly: New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Louisiana, and Colorado. Additionally, other states like Georgia, New Mexico, Idaho, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., have reported elevated hospital visits for flu symptoms.
The 'Super Flu' strain, known as subclade K, is a variant of Influenza A (H3N2) and has been spreading rapidly in various countries, including Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada. This new strain emerged over the summer and is causing concern due to its potential severity, similar to the symptoms of Influenza A.
Symptoms of the flu, whether caused by Influenza A or subclade K, include fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and occasionally vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms are typically more severe compared to those caused by Influenza B.
