And indeed, her determination paid off. With a massive crowd, including her fiancé Jason Kubler, cheering her on, Inglis found herself with four match points after establishing a solid lead. Siegemund, a formidable opponent, fought back and saved two of those points, but Inglis' grit and belief in herself proved decisive.
"She [Siegemund] was nervous too, I could sense it," Inglis reflected. "But I knew I had to earn it. I'm grateful it went my way."
The turning point came in the third set when Inglis, ranked 168 in the world, broke her 37-year-old opponent's serve at 5-4. This shift in momentum set the stage for her dominant performance in the deciding tiebreak.
"I just kept fighting," Inglis said. "The support from my team and the crowd really helped me believe in myself."
And believe she did! Inglis is now the last Australian standing in the women's draw, and her reward is a third-round match against the 16th seed, Naomi Osaka.
"It's an incredible feeling to be in this position," Inglis added. "But I know the hard work isn't over. Tennis can be brutal, and I'm ready for the challenge."
