The architectural world is abuzz with excitement as Liverpool University's new School of Architecture reveals its stunning transformation! But is it a masterpiece or a missed opportunity?
The project, now nearing completion, has already welcomed its inaugural cohort of students, offering them a brand-new three-story extension spanning approximately 3,000m². This modern addition, built on a former car park, seamlessly integrates with the school's existing facilities, creating a vibrant learning environment.
The development also encompasses the renovation of the iconic Leverhulme Building, originally designed by Charles Reilly in the 1930s and later updated in the 1980s. The neighboring Georgian residential terrace is also part of this ambitious project.
In 2019, O'Donnell + Tuomey emerged as the unanimous choice for this prestigious project after a rigorous two-stage selection process. The judging panel, led by renowned architecture critic Kenneth Frampton, included prominent figures like Tate director Maria Balshaw and the late architect Michael Wilford.
The Irish firm was selected from an impressive longlist of 18 practices, narrowed down to a final six. Competing against renowned names like 6a architects, Eric Parry Architects, and Carmody Groarke, O'Donnell + Tuomey's proposal stood out for its exceptional architectural quality.
But here's where it gets controversial. Marco Iuliano, a professor at the architecture school and the mastermind behind the competition, praised the building's opening as a 'major milestone'. He highlighted the challenges of modern architecture, such as standardization and financial constraints, but also emphasized the university's unwavering commitment and the architects' resilience in delivering a project of outstanding quality.
Iuliano also pointed out the unique involvement of students and staff in the decision-making process, stating, 'The educational side has been a constant workshop, and I can't think of anything comparable in architectural education.' This inclusive approach is a bold statement in an industry often criticized for its exclusivity.
The extension boasts a range of facilities, including interconnected studios, exhibition and teaching spaces, offices, and even a café. Liverpool City Council approved the plans in 2022, and the public will get their first glimpse of this architectural marvel at the end of April, when the AJ Small Projects 2026 Award will be hosted at the new school.
