EV Buyers Still Need Guidance: Charging Fears & Government Action Explained (2026)

Electric Vehicle (EV) buyers still need support as a recent survey by Electrifying.com reveals ongoing challenges. The survey, conducted with the AA, found that a significant portion of UK drivers lack confidence in driving and charging EVs, highlighting the need for 'hand-holding' and better government initiatives to improve accessibility nationwide.

The survey, which surveyed over 13,000 UK drivers, revealed that nearly 50% lack confidence in driving EVs, and around two-thirds lack confidence in charging them. This underscores the importance of providing new EV drivers with the necessary support and information, such as understanding range requirements, charging methods, and seasonal range drops.

The survey also found that only 14% of non-EV motorists believe electric cars are cheaper to run than petrol or diesel vehicles. Moreover, 55% of respondents said the government's proposed pay-per-mile tax on EVs would discourage them from going electric. This policy has drawn criticism from industry figures, who argue it undermines efforts to promote EV adoption.

The government needs to take a more proactive role in making electric cars more accessible, particularly in addressing the charging infrastructure gap between Westminster and northern cities. The survey highlights the need for increased visibility of charging points and more comprehensive support for used EVs.

The survey was conducted alongside the AA, whose president, Edmund King, emphasized the need for more accurate information and incentives to convince mainstream motorists to go electric. While early adopters have already made the switch, the majority still require the right support to make the leap.

The survey's findings underscore the ongoing challenges faced by EV buyers and the need for continued support and initiatives to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
