Allegedly, senior players have voiced their concerns, highlighting that discontent has been growing throughout Robertson's time in charge.
Adding to the crisis, Savea, a key figure in the team, is reportedly feeling "seriously unhappy" and is contemplating his future in New Zealand rugby if no changes occur. He has been considering the possibility of extending his stay with the Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan beyond the 2026 season or even making a move to Europe. Although Savea has a contract with New Zealand Rugby that runs until the end of 2027, there are indications that he may seek to leave before the next Rugby World Cup set to take place in Australia.
There has been speculation, as mentioned in the Herald, that Leinster could be a potential destination for Savea, who might wish to join the ranks of players like Jordie Barrett and Rieko Ioane, both of whom signed with the Irish club for shorter stints during their sabbaticals. Unlike those players, however, Savea’s prospective move could involve a longer commitment unless significant changes are made to the All Blacks’ coaching staff.
New Zealand Rugby appears to be facing a period of instability, especially with reports of "stinging" feedback from players about Robertson’s coaching. While initially it seemed that Robertson's position was secure, the extent of player dissatisfaction may compel New Zealand Rugby to reconsider its strategy. Hansen, too, is reportedly at odds with several senior team members, placing additional pressure on the coaching setup.
Moving to replace Robertson less than two years before the 2027 World Cup would represent a monumental shift for the team, likely resulting in considerable upheaval. A more plausible scenario may involve altering the coaching staff, reminiscent of the changes made under Ian Foster in 2022 when Brad Mooar and John Plumtree were let go, bringing in Joe Schmidt and James Ryan instead. It’s important to note that Foster enjoyed the backing of players during his tenure, which seems not to be the case for Robertson based on the latest reviews.
While the All Blacks' performance under Robertson has not been catastrophic, it appears that the issues within the team run deeper than just game results.
